Harvard Business Case Study

Harvard Business Case Study by Sam

I have been reading the case several times before the day has finally came. Anyway, I still found it hard to express my own opinion when given the actual questions.

First of all, I think it was a great experiences for me, more or less it made me like staying in a conference, because all of us were giving opinion and debating the points. I like this type of event, to improve my speaking and for me, it is the real university lifestyle in my imaginary.

About the case study, I strongly believed that Symbian will be totally out of this race soon. What do we think about when talk about Symbian? Firstly,I will say Nokia Smartphone and it is lag. I don't care how fast or how much improvement for the newest released phone of Symbian OS phone, at least it is the public perception. While for the latest news about this issue, even Symbian's biggest shareholder, Nokia has stopped using Symbian OS and cooperate with Microsoft to produce so-called Windows Phone. It is concluded lack of innovation in IT market would bring you down in supremely short time no matter how long you dominated the market share before.

While for the success of  IOS, I would say the biggest contribution would come from Steve Jobs. I don't really know how much he contributed on the phone features, but at least his kind of high profile has given anticipation to Apple fans each time he stood on stage. Actually we could found out Iphone was not prefect, each time the new released phones could came out with several problems for instance the latest one,low battery life. Anyway, due to the impression planted by Steve Jobs on public, the mind of perfection of Apple products could hardly modified, at least not now.

Google Android, I don't know much about it, but bunch of phone manufacturer are using this OS and I know I need to own it in the future. This is a trend. Sadly I am still using Symbian phone. I could hardly imagine the future development of this open source OS. Bunch of phone manufacturer, network service provider are backing it up. Everyone has the chance to build it and make it even better. Let's see how it fight with Apple.

That's all with my opinions after reading the study case! Thanks!

Harvard Business Case Study by Chia

Finaly, the day has coming, it's Wednesday, 21st December 2011.Its our turn for HBS (Harvard Business Case Study) discussion season. This is about a mobile OS war.

And, our group (GeForce)  have honored to work with I-virus in the discussion session. It is a moment to show our teamwork and proactive. Before the discussion start, lectures have giving us a simple explained how the discussion will going to.After this, we got the Question 8 , which ask about the SWOT analysis of Symbian and comment the company situation of Symbian.

We were given 30 minutes to discuss this question.Actually, this is very short time to discuss a controversial question.Anyway, we have nice show in the end. =D

Because , we always believe that we can do it !

In the end of the discussion, we learned so much about Symbian, Android and Apple. In my opinion, IT is a field that growing very fast.If you want to stand in front of IT. You must keep update yourself and be able to create a OS system. So, Innovation is very important toward IT field.

Harvard Business Case Study by Aaron

the day has finally come, its 21st December, its our turn for the HBS discussion session. The discussion started at 2pm supposed to end at 5pm, but due to the passion of presenting our points, we wrap up the session at 530pm.

Anyway, our group(GeForce) joined venture with I-virus in the session. At the beginning, our lecturers explained how the discussion session going to flow and every group was giving a question to answer. We got Question 8, which asked us to present the SWOT analysis of Symbian and also comment on the company situation of Symbian. We were given 30mins to discuss the answers among us group members. After that, we started our session with the group who got the first question. We had to wait for our turn though. We heard lots of opinions, comments, point of views and ideas, all of them are inspiring and we learned a lot through their presentations. Besides, we also given chance to give our own idea for other questions after each presentation, its a war in there, literally, because all of us were fighting to be the best team!

Its our turn to present, and we started our presentation with the SWOT analysis, its mainly about the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Thread for Symbian company. Next would be our opinion on the company.

In the end of the day, we learned so much about Symbian company and we also given the chance to answer the question " Would you sack the boss of Symbian? why so?" lol, of cause, in my opinion, we certainly should do so, because,   Apple and Google have been in the market for so many years and Symbian has yet to find a way to defend itself. Quoted from my lecturer, if someone who has failed to contribute for the company, like Symbian's big shots has failed to fight against the Apple and Google "shockwave", they should employ someone who is more capable. It helped us to realize the importance and the power of being innovative and creative. We could see this from Apple and Google, though they were the new comers in the smartphone world, they managed to overtake Symbian who has been in the business for decades.

Harvard Business Case Study by Lok

21 Dec 2011-Its turns for 1SCSR and 1SCSV to discuss the Harvard Business Case Study. The discussion took place at Bilik Kuliah 2 , Faculty Of Science Computer & Information Technology and i had joined the discussion since i am a member of 1SCSR .
1.Main Topic
Harvard Business Case Study has been introduced to the UTM students starting from year 2011 and so lucky that i am one of the first batch student who have the opportunity to join the discussion. The topic of Harvard Business Case Study that we discuss(a discussion group has formed for the case study) is " Symbian , Google & Apple In The Mobile Space ".
2.Process
As mentioned above,a discussion group were formed during the discussion session. Our group member includes  the I-Virus and GE-Force group which is also my group for TIS course while I-Virus is another group for TIS course for 1SCSR section 05.
Before the discussion begin, each group are given a task or specific topic to discuss based on the materials given before the discussion session. The task we get is to analyse the Symbian company using the SWOT method and discuss the situation of company of Symbian.
During the discussion session,i has been assigned with a task which is to discuss about the situation of the company of Symbian based on the data provided in the material given before the discussion session.I interpret the charts, the information of researches done by the author of the case study and elaborate all the important data from what i can see from the data and charts. As i make further study on the data and all the charts given,i found that the status of Symbian as the head of operating system in mobile space is lowering or dropping.
Undenieable that the entry of the Google Android and Apple IOS more or less had affect the status of Symbian. But why Google and Apple can rise up drastically? We cannot say that they are lucky because they has their ability and attraction to develop a better operating system compared to Symbian.

-Google Android has free lisence.
-Apple IOS has tightly linked hardware platform, software platform.
Apple IOS
Google Android
What Symbian has and how Symbian making itself as and attraction to the public?
-As 2009,almost zero invest from Symbian in comsumer advertisement.
Symbian OS
So,how Symbian can compete with the competitor with such tactic and how Symbian could done in order to compete with others?
Data collected from public shows negative impact to the Symbian OS and the satisfaction level of comsumer for the Symbian based smartphone is lower than the Google Android and Apple IOS based smartphone.
3.Conclusion
In conclusion,i believe that Symbian can bring a brighter future by inject more creative and innovative design and concept into their system design and also company tactics. This is the only way to compete with others and stand to the end.Consumer nowaday are easier being attracted by something new and interesting but not something that never change for years and years.
In the end,i hope that Symbian can make a change and stand on a great position to compete with their competitor and as a consumer, competition between competitor can bring great positive effect to us and hope that the competition between them will never ended.

Harvard Business Case Study by Tek Loon

Finally, it's is 21/12/2011. The time for section 5 and 6 to have a discussion and presentation on the HBS case study. It was about Symbian, Apple and Google, the mobile operating system. Let's give a round applause to GeForce and I-Virus. We're the teammates during our HBS case study and it's totally show our team is proactive enough in this learning session.

It was a very proud moment, and this case study had made us understand more about Symbian, Apple and Google too.

My opinion on this case study is hard to dominate one industry, we must know that when there is competition, there will be improvement. IT is a field that growing fast, so we must keep up the trend and understand what we can offer to our customer. Nowadays, we should keep our customer loyalty. For example, Apple customer is loyal to Apple products. So, we should maintain our each customer and this called Quality Engagement.

Besides, the development of technology should be keep updated. So, INNOVATION is very important. If you are able to come out with a new technology like new applications, operating system(OS), and if it is popular among the user. Hence, it can bring you a great fortune and you totally change the IT trend in the world. Can you imagine it?

Love what you do and keep doing it!!
